Growing up, I never saw women of color photographing stories. It was rare to see someone who looked like me out in the field. Representation is important to me, and that has helped me understand what I want to do as a photographer.
Creating visuals and telling the stories of underrepresented individuals is an important goal. Whether that be through personal projects or news stories, I feel it is important to show the world what is going on in our society.
In addition to telling these stories, establishing trust between myself and any person I photograph is a must to do my job. I’ve learned to do this from working at publications such as The Portager and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
With my experience in a newsroom, I specialize in portraiture and event photography. However, I am open to learning and practicing other forms of the art.
My name is Asha Blake. I am a Kent State University graduate with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in photojournalism.
I am available for projects and assignments.
